Sony A7 II review: the next great camera, someday

See the original posting on The Verge

The camera industry is the most interesting and exciting it’s been in the past 10 years. After capable smartphones decimated the point-and-shoot market, camera makers have focused their efforts on appealing to enthusiasts and professional photographers — those that need or want more than a smartphone can provide. We’ve gotten really great cameras from the likes of Fujifilm, Panasonic, Olympus, and Sony that prioritize manual controls and image quality, while still being more compact and approachable than the DSLRs that dominated the aughts.

In that vein, Sony recently released the A7 II, a compact mirrorless camera that could replace the big DSLR rigs many professionals still cling to. The A7 II is actually a successor to last year’s A7,…

See the original posting on The Verge

Starting today, Samsung’s giving you more to do with its Gear VR virtual reality headset. The company has launched a new app, Milk VR, that delivers immersive, 360-degree videos to the Galaxy Note 4-powered platform. (By the way, we really wish Samsung would move away from the truly awful “Milk” branding.) Available now as a technical preview, every video served up by Milk VR is free to watch. Some are streamable and others can be downloaded, and Samsung has vowed to deliver new clips on a constant basis. Each video spans one to ten minutes in length, according to TechCrunch, so you’ll probably run out of entertainment options pretty quickly on day one.

But keep in mind that while nothing’s stopping you from buying one, the Gear VR…

main_img Sometimes a vacation is more curse then blessing – I’ve been largely away from email and Twitter for about five days now, and returning is less a breath a fresh air and more a deep inhalation of whatever was in that ancient looking Tupperware container found at the back of the fridge behind the pickled artichoke hearts and other infrequently touched items. Not to center anyone out,… Read More

In preparation for the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Sony has released a video teaser for its next Xperia smartphone. With the device likely to be revealed in full during the company’s CES press event at 5PM on January 5th, the video reiterates the number 5 more than once, and, just to make sure the point about Android 5 is missed by no one, even includes a big red lollipop.
