Why you should almost always order one large pizza instead of two mediums

See the original posting on Boing Boing

Many pizza places offer special “deals” if you order two medium pies. You might think that two mediums deliver more cheesy goodness than one large pie, but usually you’d be mistaken. From Primer, a mathematical comparison of two 12″ pizzas and one 18″ pizza:

Area of two 12” pizzas:

12/2 = 6 6×6=36 36x? = 113.1 in² x 2 = 226.2 in²

Area of one 18” pizza:

18/2=9 9×9=81 81x? = 254.5 in²

And as we know, more pizza is always better.

Netflix claims The Witcher is already one of its most popular shows of 2019

The Witcher

Image: Netflix

Netflix released its list of the most popular movies and TV shows of 2019 and, with the exception of Disney Pixar’s Incredibles 2, every title on the list is a Netflix original.

Most notable is Adam Sandler’s Murder Mystery, which Netflix declared as the most watched title in 2019. The Sandler and Jennifer Aniston-starring comedy broke records when it first hit Netflix back in June, generating more than 30 million account views within its first three days. It marked the biggest opening weekend for a Netflix film in the company’s history.

Some of the other entires on the list, seen below, also saw record-breaking weekends or weeks for Netflix. A couple – including Henry Cavill’s The Witcher — only just came out.

The Witcher’s success is held back by Netflix’s release strategy in a post-Game of Thrones world

See the original posting on The Verge

The Witcher has everything it needs to be Netflix’s next success: popular source material, a massive marketing campaign, a well-received performance by Henry Cavill, and an iconic meme in the form of the hit song “Toss A Coin To Your Witcher.” Yet, while certainly popular, it doesn’t seem like The Witcher is going to become “must see” television like other recent hits, such as The Mandalorian on Disney+ or Watchmen on HBO. At least part of the reason why is how Netflix released it: in a single, all-you-can-eat drop — like almost all of its other shows — instead of a more traditional weekly rollout.

Weekly releases have numerous benefits for fans: continued and focused conversation every week around the latest episode, a chance to digest…

Esoteric programming language coded with images

See the original posting on Boing Boing

Piet is an esoteric programming language where the programs are encoded as images and resemble abstract paintings. Spot-on Mondrians (pictures) are the hook, but a wide range of pixelated styles are possible; the logic of the program can be exposed in the image.

Prime Number Generator

Sylvain Tintillier provides a method of generating prime numbers using Piet. Figuring out how it works is easy, he says, “Just look at the bitmap!”

Australia is only a horrifying natural death trap so it can balance out the adorableness of the quokka

See the original posting on Boing Boing

I’ve always understood Australia to be a nightmare hellscape full of crazy killer creatures. But that’s only because I hadn’t heard about the quokka. This teddy bear-sized marsupial lives on the islands off the mainland of Australia, and they’re just — I mean — look at this thing!

It’s basically a non-cannibalistic Ewok, and apparently they’re known for being friendly as hell (also exceptionally horny), earning them the distinction of the “happiest animal in the world.” Though it’s illegal to touch one, they’re allegedly super-down with selfies, too.

I would brave any Australian beast just to be best friends with one of these lil’ fellas.

Another director leaves the Uncharted movie

See the original posting on The Verge

The Uncharted movie, based on the massively popular Indiana Jones-like game series, has lost another director, according to Deadline. Its release date has also been pushed back.

Deadline says Travis Knight, who most recently directed Transformers spinoff Bumblebee, had to drop from the Uncharted movie because of scheduling difficulties. The movie is set to star Tom Holland as protagonist Nathan Drake. Holland, however, is also committed to playing Spider-Man in the next Marvel iteration of series, which apparently begins shooting this summer. Deadline reports that Sony still plans to release the Uncharted movie, but with a new director and later release date. (It was originally slated for a December 18th, 2020 release.)
