If you’re a creative or other freelancer work, at some point you may start thinking twice about giving out your personal phone number to your clients or business contacts. Besides the possible privacy issues, do you really want your business connections to be able to call you at any hour of the day or night — and on the same number you give your family and friends? A new service called OpenPhone says it can solve that problem by providing cloud-based business numbers for $10 per month.

There are, of course, several cloud-based services that provide secondary phone numbers which can be used alongside your primary carrier-based number. To begin with, there is Google Voice, probably the best-known such service, which gives you a phone…

Instagram and WhatsApp will add ‘from Facebook’ to their names

Just how uncool can Facebook make Instagram and WhatsApp? If exerting more influence over the direction of both apps by installing Facebook executives wasn’t enough, now the social network giant is going to add “Facebook” to their names. Instagram will soon become “Instagram from Facebook” and WhatsApp will turn into “WhatsApp from Facebook.” The company already follows this approach with its Workplace app. The Information first reported the planned changes, which Facebook confirmed directly.

The new titles will appear in the title for both apps in Apple’s App Store and Google Play. On your device’s home screen, the name for each will mercifully remain the same (for now). But it’s also very likely that you’ll see “from Facebook” on the…

Google Titan key

A year after arriving solely in the US, Google’s Titan two-factor authorization security key has now landed in Google’s online stores in Canada, Japan, the UK, and France. If you are working with sensitive data in one of those countries, it might be worth considering.

Google’s Titan security key is a physical security solution that (similar to competition from Yubico and Feitian) enables hardware-based two-factor authentication for the FIDO standard, letting you log into a number of apps and browsers using the key to verify that it’s actually you, instead of relying on a comparatively weak password. The key can connect to the device that requires authentication in three ways — via USB, NFC, or Bluetooth.

Samsung’s take on the Surface Laptop leaks out

See the original posting on The Verge

Samsung appears to have a new Windows laptop on the way with a design that seems to have taken some inspiration from Microsoft. The Galaxy Book S, which was leaked this afternoon by reporter Evan Blass, has a very square, mono-color keyboard and trackpad layout that very much resembles the design of Microsoft’s Surface Laptop, minus the Surface’s trademark fabric covering.

The reset of the computer is more of a departure, though. From the side, it still looks a lot like a Samsung laptop, and there’s no image yet of the top of the device. Samsung also seems to have stuck with a thinner screen aspect ratio.

For now, spec details are limited. We can see a single USB-C port and a headphone jack, and there’s some speculation…

Fantastically deep history of plug & play videogame consoles

See the original posting on Boing Boing

Back in the early 2000s, cheap plug & play videogame consoles became ubiquitous. I remember spotting them for sale everywhere from toy stores to Walgreens. Self-contained systems, they integrated one or many games instead of allowing users to swap in cartridges or CDs. Today, Frank Cifaldi of the Video Game History Foundation shares the deep and geeky history of plug & play as a launching point for his research on the TV Guide Quizmaster, “something so rare it might not even exist.” Below are a few bits from the thread. I experienced a lot of pain points when I first started using Angular; I needed to open up so many files just to create a simple Hello World app. Luckily, Angular CLI took away a lot of my initial troubles.

Angular CLI is a command-line tool that creates a simple Angular project. Angular CLI asks you questions about your app and, based on your answers, it determines the routing and the stylesheet format. How does Angular CLI do this? It uses Schematics.

AI Dungeon offers infinite, baffling adventures created with GPT-2

Adventurer! Will you attack with easy nobleness, taking reputation points from you everytime you hit back, ten times? Or will you tell the priest to finish what’s been going on with your family, thrice combined this time with Gramm Corps’ arcane branding? THE CHOICE IS YOURS in Nick Walton’s AI Dungeon!

AI Dungeon is an AI generated text adventure that uses deep learning to create each adventure. It uses OpenAI’s new GPT-2 model, which has 117 million parameters, to generate each story block and possible action.

The first couple sentences of AIDungeon and the action verbs are handcrafted, but everything else is not. For each choice that is made, the initial prompt, the last story block, and the last action are fed into the neural network. The resulting story and action options are then output by the model.
