This boomerang-like aircraft could be the first to fly on Mars

See the original posting on The Verge

With its various rover missions, NASA has been actively exploring the red surface of Mars since the ’90s — but now the space agency wants to investigate the Martian skies. NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center is testing out a prototype of a flying wing aircraft called Prandtl-m, which could be the first man-made vehicle to fly on Mars. And it looks a lot like a large titanium boomerang.

Star Trek Beyond is officially the next Star Trek movie

See the original posting on The Verge

Director Justin Lin confirmed on Twitter last night that the third installment of the Star Trek series will be called Star Trek Beyond. The announcement includes a picture of the franchise’s now familiar delta shield on a retro sleeve patch that takes you right back to the ’60s. The film, now in production in Vancouver, will feature the return of Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, and Idris Elba.

The title echoes Lin’s earlier statement that the new film won’t borrow much from the original television show. “It’s all new and fresh,” Lin told Deadline Hollywood earlier this month. “The Klingons, Romulans, and other species are great, but it’s time to go further. It has been fun to focus on creating whole new worlds and…

Paul Feig tweets gear from the new Ghostbusters

See the original posting on The Verge

It looks like Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot is about to start shooting. Feig has tweeted out a pair of behind-the-scenes photos from the new film, showing off his stars’ outfits and — what will be most interesting to fans — the new proton pack. The outfits look about the same as ever, but the proton pack has arguably taken on an even more mechanical, dirty, and thrown-together vibe. It’s not exactly gritty reboot territory, but it’s certainly an updated take.

The reboot stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. It’s due out just over a year from now, on July 22nd, 2016. From that point forward, expect more Ghostbusters than you can handle.

Sprint shoots for simpler wireless bill. Does not score.

See the original posting on The Verge

Sprint’s new ad campaign features soccer star David Beckham taking some funny shots at competitors, but not all his volleys hit the mark.

In the ads, Beckham goes to Sprint’s rival stores and finds their pricing confusing, with separate prices for device payments and service as well as overage fees and other costs. Then, he goes to the Sprint store and all is made simple and easy. Plus, because it’s a commercial, he gets splendid customer service and he doesn’t even have to wait in line.

Watch the first trailer for BoJack Horseman’s boozy, bawdy second season

See the original posting on The Verge

BoJack Horseman‘s second season is set to premiere on July 17th, and Netflix has just released a trailer promoting the ribald animated comedy. The show is bringing back the same star-studded cast to populate its world of anthropomorphic animals and messed-up human pals, including Will Arnett’s titular washed-up, misanthropic actor. BoJack has managed to drag his career far enough out of the gutter to land a glamorous starring role in a dream project, but he had to burn a few bridges to get there. He’s now trying to turn his unexpected career revival into a platform for meaningful, lasting personal improvement. Based on the trailer, it’s going to take more than some morning jogs and a few smoothies: BoJack’s still boozing, smoking, and…

Here’s how Apple Music compares to Spotify, Tidal, and other streaming services

See the original posting on The Verge

One question immediately stands out when you start to compare the biggest music streaming services: where are the differences?

The reality right now is that Apple Music and Google Play Music, Spotify and Rdio, and any other pair of other music streaming services sound pretty similar on the surface. They offer about 30 million songs for about $10 a month. They let you play music offline and offer radio services and playlists if you don’t feel like picking something yourself. They stream in relatively high-quality audio, and they probably have some videos for you to watch.

iOS 8.4 with Apple Music is now available

See the original posting on The Verge

Apple Music is now streaming. The subscription music service has gone live as part of iOS 8.4, which is now available for iPhones and iPads. Though the update includes a small number of other changes, it’s primarily about the release of Apple Music. The service is available inside of a redesigned version of iOS’ Music app, which has been changed to almost entirely focus on the streaming service. It’s a big moment for Apple, which was once the biggest name in digital music and is now trying to reclaim its title. Alongside the release of Apple Music, Apple’s digital radio station, Beats 1, is going live as well. It’s supposed to kick off at 12PM ET. There should be new Pharrell and an Eminem interview.
