Laurie Penny weighs in with an important addition to the discussion about privilege and pain, making the important point that privilege is not the absence of pain, discrimination or hellish conditions — but that doesn’t mean that the nerds who suffered through school bullying are without it. In theory, the FBi needs to get the FISA court to sign off on requests for secret warrants to spy on Americans — in practice, it almost always rubberstamps those requests. But on the rare occasions when the FISA court says no, the FBI just gets a National Security Letter (AKA “the other secret warrant”) and gets spying. Read the rest
Mark Zuckerbergs New Years Resolutions are pretty legendary. The Facebook founder and chief executive is famous for setting himself a “personal challenge” every year, from only eating meat from animals hes killed himself in 2011 to wearing a tie every day in 2009. In 2010 he even set himself the task of learning Mandarin, a goal that came to fruition rather publicly when he conducted a Q&A in the language in Beijing this year. Of course, not everyone was impressed by his accent, but how many languages have you learned lately?

You’re going to see lots of curved things at CES 2015. TVs, all-in-one PCs, and plenty desktop monitors. LG’s one of the main pushers of curved displays, and tonight it’s announcing one of those products before we head for Las Vegas. The 34-inch UltraWide desktop monitor has been designed for gamers and integrates support for AMDs FreeSync, which eliminates unsightly screen tearing that can happen when your monitor and graphics card get out of sync. And since it’s got a 21:9 aspect ratio, you’ll be able to see details on screen that are hidden from your multiplayer foes playing Battlefield 4 on 16:9 monitors. LG’s not new to 21:9 displays, but it’s describing the new UltraWide as one of its best yet, promising unrivaled color accuracy…
The fruit bat has long been suspected of sparking the ongoing Ebola epidemic in West Africa, but new research suggests that it may have been an insect-eating bat that first transmitted the virus to a human host.
At $600, the Matter And Form 3D Scanner is probably the cheapest 3D laser scanner on the market. While the system does require some tweaking to get great scans, I was quite pleased with the scanning results and, more important, thing this thing can stand up to the big boys in 3D scanning. Most 3D scanners use a turntable to rotate and scan objects. Like the impressive Makerbot Digitizer the… Read More

Samsung’s produced some very impressive laptops from its Ativ Book 9 line, and for 2015 the company is putting forward a new ultrabook that could be its strongest answer to Apple’s MacBook Air yet. The 2015 Ativ Book 9 includes a 12.2-inch display that bests Apple’s ultraportable in resolution at 2560×1600. It’s also capable of getting super bright, jumping up to a brightness level of 700 nits when you activate its outdoor mode. You’ll want to reserve that for emergencies though, since leaving it on surely eat away at the Ativ Book 9’s battery normally capable of lasting 10.5 hours on a charge in no time at all.
Otherwise, the appearance of this 2015 Ativ Book 9 is similar to others in Samsung’s recent lineup. It’s all aluminum with…
Samsung sure loves its curved display HDTVs, and now it’s expanding the design trend to cover PCs as well. Today the company announced its brand new Ativ One 7 Curved, an all-in-one Windows machine that features a slight curve in its screen that isn’t as readily apparent compared to what we’ve seen from its recent 4K TVs. It’s a 27-inch, 1920×1080 panel with pretty fantastic viewing angles and vivid color reproduction. But it could stand to be a bit sharper. The resolution is no match for Apple’s flagship iMac with Retina Display, and it even falls short of Cupertino’s regular 27-inch model. When you’re sitting so close to a PC, those extra pixels can make a world of difference. Oh well. If you’re wondering just how curved this thing is,…
After more than a decade of traversing the red planet, NASA’s Mars Opportunity rover is facing some problems in its old age namely, ones with memory. According to Discovery News, the rover has been going through bouts of “amnesia” thanks to failures in its flash memory storage.
“The Opportunity rover uses two different types of memory: “volatile” and “non-volatile,” NASA project manager John Callas told DiscoveryNews. The volatile memory is akin to a computer’s RAM, so any data stored there is wiped every time the rover shuts down. The non-volatile memory is where the important data like telemetry the measurements the rover is collecting is stored so that it can be accessed whenever Opportunity is powered on. The problem with the…
