The designers behind the Nike FuelBand are working on old-school watches

See the original posting on The Verge

If you were to place a bet on the future of wearables, odds are good that your cash would not go toward a line of ordinary wristwatches. Yes, wristwatches: the things that tell the time and little else, often operating on centuries-old technology. The very objects that were disrupted by cellphones over the last decade. Dinosaurs.

Don’t tell that to Astro Studios, though. The prolific San Francisco-based branding and design firm has helped meld a variety of high-tech products ranging from…

What the ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ trailer tells us about the galaxy’s future

See the original posting on The Verge

When Lucasfilm announced it was killing the Star Wars Expanded Universe, I was heartbroken. The galaxy George Lucas had dreamed up took form in the original movies, but it was populated and fully realized by the authors, artists, and video game developers that helped build Star Wars’ back stories. Now, like a blaster taken to my childhood memories, that Expanded Universe was gone. I thought the damage would be permanent.

But I’ve just seen the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer. I’ve seen…

I designed a better lightsaber than J.J. Abrams while I was in line for coffee this morning

See the original posting on The Verge

Today I finally realized why there are so many Star Wars fanboys: there’s a lot of shady pseudoscience behind everything in the Star Wars universe, and it’s pretty fun to argue about.

Today’s preeminent fanboy argument is over the crazy new lightsaber in the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer. In the darkest vignette from the trailer, we’re shown a cloaked figure who stumbles down a snowy slope in a dark forest. The figure reaches the bottom, enters a defensive stance, and whips out a lightsaber that looks like a medieval claymore: a two-handed longsword with a crossguard.

The only problem is that this design is pretty stupid for a lightsaber, at least when it looks like this:

The E-Label Act Will Remove Those Silly FCC Symbols From The Back Of Future Gadgets

See the original posting on TechCrunch

You know all that crap that’s listed on the back of your smartphone and tablet? It looks something like this: A jumble of letters and words, an FCC symbol, and instructions to not throw your electronic equipment into the trash. It’s ugly, and generally a waste of space. But luckily for us, it’s time to say goodbye to that mess. In what feels a bit like a holiday gift,… Read More

Amazon’s ‘Cyber Monday’ sales start tomorrow and run for eight days

See the original posting on The Verge

Say hello to Cyber Saturday. Amazon’s not waiting for Monday to kick off its “Cyber Monday” sales. The leading online retailer has said its limited-time deals will begin tomorrow — Saturday — and span eight days. As usual with Amazon, everything will come and go very quickly, so you’ll want to check ahead to see when the item you want will go on sale. Discounts will be offered “as often” as every 10 minutes, according to Amazon.

The company is saving a few major sales for Cyber Monday itself, promising three “coveted” deals. And mobile users will see exclusive savings with Amazon’s app on iOS and Android, so you’ll have to check back there occasionally if you absolutely don’t want to miss anything. We’ve rounded up some of the better…

The new radio stars: welcome to the podcast age

See the original posting on The Verge

Alex Blumberg in real life sounds just like Alex Blumberg on the radio.

If you’ve ever listened to This American Life, the massively popular weekly radio show, or Planet Money, NPR’s excellent economy-explaining podcast, you know Alex Blumberg’s voice. I certainly did. Today, as he stands in front of the laptop he’s perched on a wooden chair atop a long table (a brilliant hack of a standing desk), it’s hard not to close my eyes and just listen.

That is, of course, exactly what Blumberg is hoping for. Here in the brand-new offices of Gimlet Media, on the fifth floor of a downtown Brooklyn co-working building, amid piles of old furniture and terrifying art, Blumberg and his colleagues are attempting to build a big business out of…

Here Star Wars, I Fixed Your ‘Force Awakens’ Lightsaber Crossguard For You

See the original posting on TechCrunch

crossblad The first Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer features all kinds of things that make my diehard Star Wars soul quiver and dance, but the crossguard on the dark side lightsaber spotted in the teaser, while initially cool, increasingly isn’t one of them. It looks ultimately very impractical, and I couldn’t help but offer up some engineering tips for the weapon’s designer. Let… Read More

The surreal fantasy paintings of Jakub Rebelka

See the original posting on The Verge

Jakub Rebelka’s work is like a cross between a stained-glass window and a colorful manga — it’s timeless, in a way, with a flat, intricately detailed style, but it also blurs the line between science fiction and fantasy in a way that’s absolutely gorgeous. Drawing is about the only thing he ever imagined doing; Rebelka’s illustrations have been featured in comic books and video games, but he says his favorite piece is whatever he’s working on at the moment.

“I am experiencing my…

New Yorkers don’t care about ‘Star Wars’ teasers

See the original posting on The Verge

Lincoln Center on Black Friday might as well be a wasteland. That’s understandable enough; most of us are either out shopping or still in bed, recovering from last night’s Thanksgiving dinner. But when Disney opts to tease the upcoming Star Wars film in just a handful of theaters, you’d expect more than a few superfans waiting in line for a chance to see the Millennium Falcon again. But that’s not what happened. At 9:00 in the morning on what might be the biggest day for the franchise in years, most of New York City’s Star Wars fans stayed home.

Let’s Make Bitcoin The Biggest Humanitarian Tool The World Has Ever Seen

See the original posting on TechCrunch

bitcoin-mountain-rise News junkies of the world may be forgiven for becoming the latest tech skeptics: 2014 has been a year of global mayhem. Instead of creating a connected civic safety net, it seems like tech platforms simply amplified messages and images from ungovernable parts of the world. Boko Haram kidnapped girls in Nigeria, and we fought back with mostly futile hashtags. ISIS broadcast its brutality… Read More

Watch the first trailer for ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’

See the original posting on The Verge

It’s finally here: a first look at the new Star Wars. The teaser trailer runs 88-seconds long and is available to watch online and in theaters starting today. Here’s all you need to know: it looks really, really good. The trailer gives a first glimpse at a lot of the new and returning stars, but it also shows just how great a job director J.J. Abrams’ appears to have done in putting back together the Star Wars universe. This isn’t much for now, but it ought to get fans’ hopes way up.

While this is only a short glimpse at The Force Awakens, this is the first look that we’ve gotten at all. That’s partly because Disney has been incredibly secretive about the production of Episode VII,…
